2.2.2 Sustainable Food-Waste Management at UniMAP

Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) is committed to advancing sustainable food systems on campus through the Food-Waste to Compost Programme, managed by the Centre of Sustainable Campus & Energy Management (COSCEM). This initiative aligns with SDG 2.2.2 by promoting the efficient use of food resources and reducing food loss.

COSCEM staff collect food waste directly from campus cafés. Each batch is carefully weighed and recorded, providing accurate data for monitoring and reporting purposes. The collected waste is then processed in a composting machine, transforming it into nutrient-rich compost fertilizer that is used across campus landscaping and green spaces.

Impact and Sustainability:

• Reducing waste: Diverts significant amounts of food waste from landfills, minimizing environmental impact.
• Resource recovery: Converts waste into compost fertilizer, closing the loop in the campus food system.
• Data-driven approach: Regular weighing and record-keeping allow for performance tracking and transparency.
