6.4.2 Efficient Water Use in Landscape Maintenance
Responsible Landscape Water Management
Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) practices responsible and efficient water management in maintaining its campus greenery.
To ensure the sustainability of the landscape ecosystem, UniMAP has appointed three contractors, each responsible for landscape maintenance in different zones across the campus.
Watering activities are conducted twice daily, focusing primarily on newly planted species to ensure healthy establishment and growth.
Use of Recycled Water from Retention Pond
In line with UniMAP’s sustainability efforts, water used for landscape maintenance is sourced from the campus retention pond, reducing reliance on treated potable water.
Each contractor uses approximately one medium water tank (2,500 litres) per watering session.
This approach demonstrates UniMAP’s commitment to recycling and reusing water for non-potable purposes.
Water Usage Calculation
The total estimated annual water usage for landscape watering is calculated as follows:
Water needed per contractor per day: 2,500 L
Watering frequency: 2 times daily
Working days per month: 26 days
Months per year: 12 months
Number of contractors: 3
Formula:
2,500 L × 2 × 26 × 12 × 3 = 4,680,000 litres per year
Sustainable Impact
By utilizing non-potable water from the retention pond and maintaining controlled watering schedules, UniMAP effectively reduces demand for treated water while ensuring the vitality of campus greenery.
