2.3.1 Enhancing Food Security and Hygiene at UniMAP
Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) actively supports food security and promotes safe food consumption on campus through initiatives organized by the Professional and Public Programmes (PPP) and campus management.
Pasar Malam Programme
To address food insecurity and provide students with affordable and diverse meal options, PPP organizes a weekly “Pasar Malam” (Night Market) inside the campus. Held every Monday, the programme offers a variety of nutritious food selections, ensuring that students have access to affordable, safe, and enjoyable meals. This initiative not only supports food accessibility but also fosters a vibrant campus community.
Food Hygiene and Safety Inspections
UniMAP maintains high standards of food safety through regular premises inspections. Twice per year, inspections are conducted to ensure that cleanliness and hygiene standards are fully complied with, guaranteeing that all food provided on campus meets established safety requirements.
Through these programmes, UniMAP demonstrates its commitment to SDG 2.3.1, promoting sustainable food systems, preventing hunger, and ensuring food safety for all students.

2.3.1 UniMAP's strategy combines immediate protection (safe food via inspections) with long-term empowerment (agricultural skills and innovation via INSAT), forming a comprehensive approach to tackling the multifaceted challenge of student food insecurity under the umbrella of SDG 2.
PREMISES INSPECTION & GRADING
This inspection and grading are carried out in compliance with strict standards including checking the cleanliness level of the premises, the anti-typhoid vaccination status of the premises workers, checking the temperature of the refrigerator (food & raw material storage box), oil trap and others. In addition to the inspections carried out, premises operators are also given advice and explanations related to hygiene and food safety issues by members on duty in the field.
Premises grade rating certificates are given to food premises operators based on three forms of recognition namely Grade A, B & C
Institute of Sustainable Agrotechnology
The Institute of Sustainable Agrotechnology (INSAT) is a department under the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research and Innovation that focuses on developing agricultural technology innovations for the campus. It provides farm-based ecosystem services for research, teaching, and learning purposes, as well as Agri-TVET training plots and technology transfer to students and the local community. INSAT oversees the development of UniMAP AgroNexus, an agricultural project framework that involves industry, agencies, communities, and alumni in agro-food production and freshwater fish farming projects. Several INSAT research project also focus on commercializing agricultural innovations for use by agencies and the agricultural industry in Malaysia.
