17.4.1 Integrating Sustainability into Academic Programmes

UniMAP is firmly committed to meaningful education aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Sustainability elements are embedded across all academic programmes through Programme Outcomes (POs) that promote sustainable practices, as outlined in the Academic Guidebook.

For example, in the Engineering Programme (p. 56), PO7 emphasizes understanding the sustainability and societal impact of engineering solutions. Similarly, in the New Media Communication Programme (p. 488), PO3 focuses on social, cultural, global, and environmental responsibility in professional practice.

UniMAP’s 21 engineering, 13 engineering technology, and 5 diploma programmes are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) and the Engineering Technology Accreditation Council (ETAC). Both councils require compliance with PO7, which addresses environmental and sustainability competencies, as a mandatory accreditation outcome under the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM).

This accreditation requirement ensures that sustainability and SDG principles are systematically integrated into UniMAP’s curricula, producing graduates who are aware of their professional and environmental responsibilities.

17.4.2 Integrating Sustainability Across Programmes and Courses

UniMAP integrates sustainability education across a wide range of academic programmes and courses, ensuring that students gain knowledge and competencies aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

At the programme level, UniMAP offers specialised degrees such as the Bachelor of Environmental Engineering with Honours, which focuses on environmental protection, sustainable resource management, and pollution control. The programme includes key sustainability-related courses such as Environmental Law, Health and Safety, Solid and Hazardous Waste Engineering, Environmental Impact Assessments, and Sustainable Energy, preparing graduates to address sustainability challenges in industry and society.

At the course level, sustainability principles are embedded throughout the curriculum. A search for the keyword “sustainable” in the UniMAP Academic Guidebook identifies more than 80 undergraduate courses incorporating sustainability within their learning outcomes or course objectives. 17.4.3 Strengthening Community Partnerships through Sustainable Learning – Projek SULAM Bersama Komuniti Kampung Che Ok

In alignment with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17 – Partnerships for the Goals, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) continues to foster meaningful collaborations between the university and local communities through the Service Learning Malaysia – University for Society (SULAM) initiative.

Under the course EMK41003 – Technologist in Society, students from Group 14 of the Bachelor of Electrical Engineering Technology programme successfully implemented a community-based project titled “Projek SULAM Bersama Komuniti Kampung Che Ok – Inkubator Telur Ayam Berasaskan Teknologi IoT.” The project was conducted under the supervision of Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Muhammad Izuan Fahmi.

This initiative aimed to support local poultry farmers in Kampung Che Ok by developing an Internet of Things (IoT)-based egg incubator system. The innovative system helps regulate temperature and humidity automatically, addressing challenges posed by unpredictable weather conditions. As a result, it enhances hatch rates, ensures consistent production, and contributes to sustainable rural livelihoods.

Beyond the technological innovation, the project also integrated community engagement activities, including gotong-royong to clean the village mosque and cemetery, as well as cultural and recreational events such as colouring contests, anyaman ketupat, and sepak raga competitions. These activities strengthened social bonds and promoted mutual learning between students and community members.

Through this SULAM project, UniMAP exemplifies its commitment to community empowerment, sustainable innovation, and lifelong learning, reinforcing the spirit of SDG 17 – Partnerships for Sustainable Development. 17.4.3 Strengthening University–Community Partnerships through SULAM – “Eksplorasi UniMAP: Kembara Sains, Teknologi dan Media”

In support of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17 – Partnerships for the Goals, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) continues to build strong collaborations between academia and society through the Service Learning Malaysia – University for Society (SULAM) initiative.

The programme titled “Eksplorasi UniMAP: Kembara Sains, Teknologi dan Media” was organized by students and lecturers from the Faculty of Electronic Engineering Technology (FKTEN). This initiative successfully bridged theoretical learning with real-world application, offering a transformative educational experience that benefits both students and the community.

According to Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Nashrul Fazli bin Mohd Nasir, Deputy Dean (Academic) of FKTEN, the programme serves as an important bridge between the university and the community. He emphasized the vital role of technology in modern life and the importance of nurturing children’s interest in higher education and technology through interactive learning experiences.

The visit provided children from Rumah Kanak-Kanak Arau (RKK Arau) — identified as Ibn Al-Sabil (those without permanent guardianship) — an opportunity to experience university life and be inspired by the world of science, technology, and innovation. Activities included campus tours, a robotics workshop, TVET knowledge exposure (electrical and welding), knowledge-sharing sessions with SULAM students, an engagement session with the Perlis Journalists Association, and visits to various UniMAP facilities. These hands-on activities were designed to motivate and cultivate the children’s curiosity towards education and future careers.

According to Muhammad Nabil Aiman bin Asrol, Programme Director and final-year student in the Bachelor of Electronic Telecommunication Design programme, this initiative builds upon the success of the Hari Teknologi Masyarakat 2024 at RKK Arau, jointly organized with UETECH. The current semester’s programme involved multiple academic courses and dedicated lecturers, including:

This meaningful engagement not only exposed children to the exciting world of STEM and technology but also inspired them to dream big and pursue excellence in education. With strong support from multiple stakeholders, initiatives like this demonstrate UniMAP’s ongoing commitment to sustainable education, social inclusion, and lifelong learning, in line with SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals.

In support of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17 – Partnerships for the Goals, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) continues to strengthen collaborative ties with schools and communities through the Service Learning Malaysia – University for Society (SULAM) initiative.

The “English Fun Day 2024” programme, led by Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Noormaizatul Akmar as Programme Director, was successfully held at Sekolah Kebangsaan Utan Aji. The event was jointly organized by UniMAP lecturers, teachers from the school, and UniMAP student facilitators who served as mentors and activity leaders.

The programme ran smoothly and joyfully, providing pupils with an engaging platform to improve their English proficiency through fun, interactive, and creative activities. Beyond language learning, the initiative also fostered teamwork, confidence, and leadership skills among participants.

Such programmes, if expanded nationwide, could play a vital role in nurturing creativity, communication, and leadership among young learners from an early age. 17.4.3 Promoting Sustainable Practices through SULAM – “Preserving School Areas Using Recycled Materials via Ferrocement Construction”

In line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17 – Partnerships for the Goals, the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Technology (FKTA), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), in collaboration with Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Derma, successfully organized a Service Learning Malaysia – University for Society (SULAM) programme titled “Preserving School Areas Using Recycled Materials via Ferrocement Construction.”

The programme involved 23 Form 4 students from the Visual Arts Education stream of SMK Derma. It was facilitated by five final-year students from UniMAP’s Bachelor of Civil Engineering and Bachelor of Environmental Engineering programmes, who acted as the organising committee and facilitators throughout the event.

Participants learned practical skills in creating flower pots using ferrocement and recycled materials, while fostering stronger relationships between university students and the school community. The activity served as a hands-on platform to promote environmental sustainability, recycling awareness, and creative reuse of waste materials into valuable products.

The main objective of the programme was to raise environmental awareness and demonstrate eco-friendly solutions to repurpose waste, contributing to the development of sustainable communities. By transforming discarded materials into functional products, the initiative not only provided quality education but also supported efforts to reduce waste mismanagement and its negative impacts on the environment.

FKTA expressed heartfelt appreciation to Puan Haliah binti Othman, Principal of SMK Derma, Cikgu Fadli, Head of the Visual Arts Department, and all teachers who participated and offered full support for the programme’s success.

17.4.4 Assessing Student Learning and Retention of Sustainability Concepts at UniMAP

Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) employs a structured and holistic approach to evaluate students’ understanding and retention of sustainability concepts across academic programmes, aligning with SDG 17.4.4 (Partnerships for Quality Education and Capacity Development).

The evaluation framework combines formative and summative assessments to ensure both short-term comprehension and long-term knowledge retention.

Formative Assessments

Class discussions, reflective exercises, and short quizzes are used to measure students’ immediate understanding of sustainability-related topics and encourage active participation.

Summative Assessments

Project-based assignments, presentations, and examinations require students to apply sustainability principles to real-world problems, demonstrating their ability to integrate and translate knowledge into practical solutions.

Collaborative and Reflective Learning

Group activities assess teamwork, leadership, and critical thinking, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration. Continuous reflection activities further enable students to relate sustainability concepts to personal experiences and professional contexts, fostering long-term internalization.

Through this systematic assessment approach, UniMAP ensures that sustainability education is not only taught but deeply embedded in students’ learning experience, producing graduates who are capable of applying sustainable thinking and responsible decision-making in their future careers.
